How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take? A Tampa Contractor Explains

    By Dan — CAVU Design & Construction | June 1, 2025

When you're tearing up the most essential room in your house, the timeline matters. Homeowners often ask us how long they'll have to live with construction dust and a porta-potty in the driveway. The short answer? A typical bathroom remodel in Tampa takes about 3 to 5 weeks of active construction. However, the full process from the first phone call to the final polish takes longer. Let's break down the phases.

Phase 1: Planning, Design, and Permitting (2-4 Weeks)

Before a single hammer swings, significant work happens behind the scenes. This phase includes finalizing the design, selecting materials (tile, fixtures, vanity), and ordering everything. In Tampa, supply chain delays can still affect specialty items like custom glass shower doors or specific tile patterns.

Additionally, if your remodel involves moving plumbing or electrical lines, we ensure all work is compliant with Hillsborough County. A professional remodeling expert will help coordinate this process, ensuring everything is safe and up to code.

    Phase 2: Demolition and Rough-In (1 Week)

Once permits are approved and materials are on hand, construction begins. Demolition usually takes 1 to 2 days. After the space is gutted to the studs, the "rough-in" begins. This is when plumbers and electricians come in to run new pipes and wiring behind the walls. Once the rough-in is complete, the county inspector must review and approve the work before we can close up the walls.

Phase 3: Drywall, Tile, and Flooring (1.5 to 2 Weeks)

This is the most time-consuming phase of active construction because it involves waiting for things to dry. Drywall mud needs time to cure before sanding and painting. Waterproofing systems (like Schluter) must be installed correctly in the shower. Tile installation is meticulous work, and grout needs time to set.

Phase 4: Fixtures, Finishes, and Final Walkthrough (1 Week)

The final phase is where it all comes together. The vanity is installed, plumbing fixtures are connected, lighting is hung, and the custom shower glass is placed. We finish with a thorough cleaning and a final walkthrough to ensure every detail meets our standards and your expectations.

    What Causes Delays?

Even with perfect planning, delays can happen. The most common culprits are:

    • Hidden Damage: Once we open the walls, we might find wood rot, water damage, or outdated plumbing that must be addressed before proceeding.
    • Material Changes: Changing your mind on tile or fixtures mid-project will almost always delay the timeline.
    • Inspection Scheduling: We are sometimes at the mercy of the county inspector's schedule.

    Questions to Ask Your Contractor

To ensure a smooth project, ask your contractor these questions before signing: "Do you order all materials before starting demolition?" and "Who will be managing the daily schedule?"

At CAVU Design & Construction, we pride ourselves on clear communication and realistic timelines. Whether you're planning a bathroom renovation, a kitchen remodel, or a new deck, we show up when we say we will.
