What's the Difference Between a Remodel and a Renovation?
While people often use the terms "remodel" and "renovation" interchangeably, they actually refer to two very different types of construction projects. Understanding the difference is important when budgeting and hiring a remodeling professional in Tampa.
What is a Renovation?
Renovate means to "restore to a good state of repair."
In a renovation, you are updating an existing room without changing its intended purpose or altering the physical structure. The layout stays exactly the same.
Examples of a renovation include:
- Painting the walls and replacing the baseboards.
- Installing new flooring.
- Swapping out an old vanity for a new one in the same spot.
- Replacing cabinet hardware and refacing cabinet doors.
Renovations are generally cheaper, faster, and often require fewer (or no) building permits from Hillsborough County since you aren't moving plumbing or taking down walls.
What is a Remodel?
Remodel means to "alter the structure or form of."
A remodel changes the layout, structure, or purpose of a space. It is a much more involved process that transforms how the area functions.
Examples of a remodel include:
- Tearing down a wall to create an open-concept kitchen and living room.
- Moving the plumbing to relocate a sink or toilet in a bathroom.
- Combining two small bedrooms into one large master suite.
- Adding a completely new room addition to the house.
Remodels are more expensive and time-consuming. Because they involve structural, electrical, and plumbing changes, they absolutely require permits and inspections to ensure the work is safe and up to Florida building codes.
